A Million Rainbows

Half the Sky is painting rainbows across China - one for every orphaned child. A million rainbows!
The Rainbow Program - a plan to train every child caregiver in China - was launched on June 1, 2011 at Great Hall of the People.
Introductory trainings (more theory than practice) for groups of 150 child welfare workers are held in 6 provinces per year.
Those 900 workers then begin the process of training the staff in their home institutions. This is just the first stage.
In-depth follow-up trainings (more practice than theory) are held in the same 6 provinces the next year.
Half the Sky stations an experienced child development expert at the provincial training base to guide newly trained caregivers.
Two national Directors’ Workshops each year prepare orphanages to assume full responsibility for their HTS-inspired programs.
1JiaRen, an online learning community for caregivers across China, serves as a gathering place for those separated by geography.

Though change can never come fast enough for a child still waiting in a Chinese orphanage, it’s felt like Half the Sky has been moving at warp speed since the Rainbow Program – a groundbreaking plan to train every child caregiver in China – was launched on Children’s Day, 2011.

For a couple of hours that June, at the Great Hall of the People, we stood still to celebrate what promises to be a whole new chapter for orphan care in China. We caught our breath. We sang together. And then we dove right in.

After that lovely celebration came the hard work of determining, with our training partners at China Center for Child Welfare and Adoption, the very best course for reaching all of the thousands of caregivers and orphanage staff that make up China’s vast child welfare system, creating a loving community of concern to watch over China's orphaned children for generations to come.

As the Rainbow Program rolls out, Half the Sky's goal to bring caring adults into the lives of each of China's orphaned children comes ever closer.
